Gunpowder Falls State Park sprawls across a jaw-dropping 18,000 acres in Baltimore and Harford Counties, making it Maryland’s largest state park. This isn’t one park—it’s six distinct areas connected by the winding Gunpowder River, each offering completely different experiences. From the 1,500-foot sandy beach at Hammerman to the nationally recognized trout waters of the Hereford Area, from the 21-mile NCR Rail Trail to the 18th-century Jerusalem Mill Village, this park packs more diversity into its boundaries than most entire state park systems. Established in 1959 to protect the stream valleys of the Big and Little Gunpowder Falls, it’s now one of the Mid-Atlantic’s most important outdoor recreation destinations.

🚴 NCR Trail: Maryland’s Premier Rail Trail

The Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail (formerly the NCR Trail) runs 21 miles from Ashland to the Pennsylvania border along the old Northern Central Railway corridor. The flat, crushed-stone surface is perfect for cycling, jogging, and family walks. The historic Monkton Station along the route houses a small museum and is a popular rest stop.

Swimming & Beach

The Hammerman Area is the park’s summertime crown jewel, featuring a 1,500-foot sandy beach along the Gunpowder River that rivals many ocean beaches for sheer fun. On hot summer weekends, the parking lot fills early—arrive before 10 AM or risk being turned away.

Secret Swimming Holes

Beyond Hammerman, the Hereford Area hides some of Maryland’s best natural swimming spots in Big Gunpowder Creek:

  • Bunker Hill Swimming Hole — Easy access, small sandy beach, clear water
  • Hobo Beach (near York Road) — Popular tubing put-in, shallow and calm
  • Raven Falls Hidden Pools — Requires a short hike, crystal-clear pools
  • Long Green Creek — Serene, cooler water, wading to swimming depths

Fishing

The Hereford Area is home to one of the most acclaimed trout streams on the East Coast. Fed by cold releases from Prettyboy Reservoir, the Big Gunpowder Falls maintains water temperatures ideal for brown, rainbow, and golden trout year-round. This is a special trout management area with specific regulations—check current Maryland DNR rules before casting.

River Tubing

Nothing says “Maryland summer” quite like floating down the Gunpowder River on a lazy afternoon. The upper section of the Big Gunpowder Falls in the Hereford Area creates a natural lazy river—shallow, clean, and calm enough for families. Bring your own tube or rent from Monkton Bike and Tube near the NCR Trail. The float takes approximately 2–3 hours depending on water levels.

Jerusalem Mill Village

Step back in time at Jerusalem Mill Village, an 18th-century Quaker settlement listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Jerusalem gristmill operated for nearly two centuries, and the preserved buildings now serve as the park’s visitor center and headquarters. Living history events bring the village to life throughout the year, with demonstrations of colonial-era crafts and trades.
