Old Fort Harrod State Park
🏰 The First Town West of the Alleghenies — Where Kentucky Began in 1774, Daniel Boone Walked, and Lincoln’s Parents Married — Old Fort Harrod State Park in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, site of the first permanent English settlement west of the Allegheny Mountains (1774), reconstructed frontier fort of James Harrod, Mansion Museum (Civil War + Native American artifacts), Lincoln Marriage Temple (original cabin where Thomas Lincoln married Nancy Hanks), pioneer cemetery, craft demonstrations, living history — Mercer County, KY
Before Lexington. Before Louisville. Before Kentucky was even a state — there was Harrodsburg.
In June 1774, Captain James Harrod led 31 men through the Appalachian wilderness to establish the first permanent English settlement west of the Allegheny Mountains. They built a stockade fort on a hill above the Salt River, and the frontier opened. Daniel Boone passed through. George Rogers Clark used it as a base to conquer the Illinois Country. Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks — Abraham Lincoln’s parents — married in a cabin that still stands here.
Old Fort Harrod is where the American West began.
