Frequently Asked Questions
When should I see the butterflies?
Monarchs arrive in late October and peak November through January. The grove at North Beach Campground has a boardwalk for viewing. Docents are often available to help spot clusters in the trees.
Can I still dig Pismo clams?
Yes, with strict limits — 10 clams per person per day, minimum 4.5-inch shell size. A California fishing license is required. Pismo clams were nearly wiped out by overharvesting and sea otter predation. The population has partially recovered thanks to harvest limits. Clam digging requires wading into the surf and feeling for clams with your feet.

About Pismo State Beach
Pismo State Beach is a legendary California beach destination — 17 miles of wide, sandy beach stretching from Pismo Beach to the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes. The beach is famous for the Pismo clam (once abundant, now protected), vehicle beach driving, the Monarch Butterfly Grove (one of the largest overwintering sites in North America), and spectacular sand dunes.

Beach driving on the Oceano Dunes section (one of the few remaining drive-on beaches in California), OHV riding in the dunes, camping right on the beach, surfing, fishing, and visiting the Monarch Butterfly Grove (November-February, up to 25,000 monarchs). Horseback riding on the beach is popular.
