Named in honor of a former Governor of Oklahoma who served between 1955 to 1959, Raymond Gary State Park is a popular state park in the southeast region of the Sooner State. Known for its modern, and well looked after facilities, this Oklahoma state park is also notable for its 263-acre lake which offers up plenty of opportunities for swimming, boating and fishing. Just over a two hour and 20 minute drive from Dallas, the park is also centrally located to Oklahoma City, Tulsa and Little Rock. This means it is easy to reach from a number of states. For those who are interested in camping overnight, the campground here is relatively small. Though it does offer RV sites with full hookups, as well as six well appointed cabins too.

For those who want to immerse themselves in nature, the Raymond Gary State Park offers plenty of outdoor pursuits for you to enjoy. Most of them take place around its flagship lake, although there are good opportunities for wildlife watching and picnicking too. Boating at Raymond Gary State Park
As the park is centered around Lake Raymond Gary, it is a haven for those who enjoy a wide range of non-motorized boating activities. This includes the likes of canoes, paddle boats and fishing boats, all of which can be rented out at the park, should you not own one. Kayaking is also a popular activity too, and there are three boat ramps for you to use. Be mindful that motorized boats are not allowed in the lake, and by law you have to have a life jacket on board any boat you take out onto the water at all times. If you happen to time your visit with the first weekend of December you should get to see the annual Christmas Boat Parade – which is run by the Raymond Gary Lake Association. There is also an annual 4th of July fireworks show on the lake as well.
Swimming at Raymond Gary State Park
As the park can get pretty hot in the summer months, swimming is a very good thing to do to cool off. By the lake there is a lovely beach for swimming and sunbathing. As it is not lifeguarded you will have to swim with caution. However, so long as you are sensible, you should enjoy the conditions.
Fishing at Raymond Gary State Park
Given the beauty of the lake it is no surprise that anglers from all over Oklahoma come to the park to cast a line. As the water is always calm and serene, you can choose to fish from a boat, or the shoreline. An unlighted boat ramp will provide you with access to the lake, and there is also an ADA accessible fishing dock at the park too. Some of the fish you can expect to catch include the likes of bluegill, largemouth bass and channel catfish. As usual, if you want to fish in any state park in Oklahoma you will need to obtain a relevant fishing license. Whilst at the park, the daily keep-limit for any type of fish is six.
Picnicking at Raymond Gary State Park
Boasting fabulous views of the mountains and lake, the Raymond Gary State Park is a great place for a family picnic. At all campsites you will find picnic tables. There are also two group picnic shelters that are situated on the lakeshore, within the southwest part of the park. Both of which can accommodate large groups for an event or party.

If you are into nature watching, the park’s mountainous landscape offers plenty of opportunity to spot a wide range of flora and fauna. This includes the likes of rabbit, whitetail deer, squirrel, and lots of different reptile species.

Camping at Raymond Gary State Park
For those who want to stay for a few days and really enjoy the wonders of the park, there are several overnight accommodation options available to you. This includes 19 RV and camper trailers sites, 10 of which come with full hookups and most of which are pull thru sites. The other 9 come with water and 30-amp to 50-amp electricity. To support these ADA compliant sites, there are also about 100 campsites which are perfect for hammocks or tents. While these sites do not have any hookups, there are restrooms with flush toilets and hot showers nearby. In addition, you will also find a dump station and fire rings, as well as a playground for children to enjoy.
Cabins at Raymond Gary State Park
As well as the RV and tent sites there are also six primitive lakefront cabins available at the park, which are particularly good places to stay at during the colder months of winter. Despite being considered primitive, these cabins are actually furnished with a good range of amenities. All of which will make your stay there a very comfortable one. Each cabin comes with two twin beds, a bathroom, both heating and air conditioning, a mini-refrigerator, microwave, dining table and even a fireplace. Linens, towels and toiletries are not supplied, so you will need to bring your own with you should you decide to make a reservation at one of them.
