Salamonie Lake State Park manages a massive 2,665-acre reservoir surrounded by over 12,000 acres of land. Historically created for flood control, the park has evolved into a premier destination for hiking, bridle riding, and fishing. Whether you’re navigating the 13-mile Bloodroot Trail or fishing for crappie in the winter, Salamonie offers a rugged outdoor experience.

💧 Water Level Awareness: As a flood control reservoir, lake levels can fluctuate significantly, especially in spring. Trails and ramps may temporarily close after heavy rains. Check current conditions before hauling your boat.

Trails: Hike, Bike & Ride

With over 40 miles of trails, Salamonie is a trail-lover’s paradise. The system includes shared-use trails for hikers and mountain bikers, plus extensive bridle trails.

  • Bloodroot Trail (13 miles): A moderate loop sharing the path with mountain biers. scenic views of the reservoir and ravines.
  • Tree Trail (1.25 miles): Moderate interpretive trail showcasing local forestry.
  • Bridle Trails (40+ miles): Dedicated equestrian trails winding through the Salamonie River State Forest. A Horse Tag is required.
  • Snowmobile Trail (40 miles): Opens in winter when snow conditions verify 4+ inches.

Interpretive Center

The Upper Wabash Interpretive Services center features exhibits on the reservoir’s history, local wildlife (including raptors), and the Miami Indians who once inhabited this river valley. Live animal displays and a bird viewing area make it a hit with families.

Is swimming allowed?

Yes, there is a designated swimming beach at Lost Bridge West SRA, open Memorial Day through Labor Day. Advisory: Blue-green algae can be present in summer. Check posted alerts and always shower after swimming.

Do I need a permit for my horse?

Yes. An annual Horse Tag or daily horse receipt is required to ride the bridle trails at Salamonie Lake and Salamonie River State Forest.

Are there cabins?

Yes, the park offers a few rental cabins. These are popular and should be reserved well in advance through the Indiana State Parks reservation system.
