Salmon Creek State Natural Area protects a pristine blackwater creek flowing into the Albemarle Sound โ€” in one of the earliest areas of English settlement in North America. The Albemarle region was settled in the 1650sโ€“1660s, decades before the official founding of Bath (1705) and New Bern (1710). The dark, tannin-stained waters of Salmon Creek flow through bald cypress and Atlantic white cedar swamp โ€” habitat for black bears, river otters, and the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker.

About Salmon Creek

Salmon Creek State Natural Area in Bertie County protects a significant bottomland hardwood swamp along the Roanoke River โ€” one of the most important floodplain forests on the Atlantic seaboard. The Roanoke bottomlands support massive bald cypresses, tupelo, and bottomland oaks that are inundated during spring floods. This ecosystem provides critical habitat for cerulean warblers, one of the most rapidly declining songbirds in North America.

Things to Do

Canoeing through the bottomland swamp, birdwatching for cerulean warblers, prothonotary warblers, and barred owls, fishing, and exploring one of the Atlantic Coast’s most significant floodplain forests.

Insider Tips

Coastal Plain: Salmon Creek preserves swamp forest along NC’s northeastern Coastal Plain โ€” one of the most ecologically rich but least-visited parts of the state. Pro tip: This region of NC feels like the Deep South โ€” Spanish moss, cypress swamps, and flat agricultural land. Lost Colony: The nearby Roanoke Island was the site of the “Lost Colony” (1587) โ€” one of America’s enduring mysteries.

Best Time to Visit

Spring: Swamp wildflowers. Fall: Cypress turning copper. Summer: Full swamp ecology (mosquitoes). Winter: Waterfowl and bare cypress.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happened to the Lost Colony?

In 1587, 115 English colonists settled on Roanoke Island โ€” including Virginia Dare, the first English child born in America. When supply ships returned in 1590, the colony had vanished โ€” the only clue was “CROATOAN” carved on a post. No confirmed trace of the colonists has ever been found. Theories range from integration with local tribes to Spanish attack to starvation. It remains America’s oldest unsolved mystery.
