Chowan Swamp State Natural Area protects 14,000 acres of pristine blackwater swamp along the Chowan River โ€” one of the largest and least-disturbed swamp forests remaining in the Mid-Atlantic region. The dark, tannin-stained water of the Chowan River flows through towering bald cypress and tupelo gum trees โ€” some over 500 years old. The swamp is home to black bears, bobcats, and the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. The Chowan River was central to the Chowanoke people โ€” the most powerful Algonquian tribe in the region when English colonists arrived at Roanoke in 1585.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is blackwater?

Blackwater rivers get their dark color from tannins โ€” organic acids released by decomposing leaves and bark. The acidic, low-oxygen water is actually very clean and supports unique fish and amphibian communities adapted to these unusual conditions.
