Frequently Asked Questions

Is the ridge hike difficult?

The ridge requires steep, off-trail climbing through alder and alpine terrain. This is backcountry Alaska — be prepared for bears, weather changes, and route-finding in unmarked terrain.

Is there hiking above treeline?

Yes — the ridge rises above the Sitka spruce forest into alpine tundra. Above treeline, you enter a world of dwarf willows, moss campion, and panoramic views. Alpine hiking in Prince William Sound is exceptionally rewarding.

About Surprise Ridge

Surprise Ridge State Marine Park in Prince William Sound protects steep, forested ridgeline and coastline in the glacial sound. The park’s dramatic terrain — where mountains rise directly from the sea — is characteristic of the tectonic forces that shaped this coast. The 1964 Great Alaska Earthquake (9.2 magnitude — the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in North America) dramatically reshaped this coastline.

Things to Do

Sea kayaking along the dramatic coastline, beach camping, wildlife viewing, fishing, and contemplating the geological forces that shaped Prince William Sound. Access by boat from Whittier or Valdez.
