Swan Creek Recreation Area provides access to Lake Oahe in Walworth County โ€” on the eastern shore of the massive 231-mile reservoir. Swan Creek takes its name from the trumpeter swans that historically migrated through the Missouri valley. Trumpeter swans โ€” the largest native waterfowl in North America (wingspan up to 8 feet!) โ€” were nearly extinct by 1935 (fewer than 100 birds remained), but intensive conservation efforts have restored the population to over 63,000 today.
