Wilson Island State Recreation Area is a 544-acre cottonwood-forested island along the Missouri River near Missouri Valley, Iowa — formed around 1900 when a sandbar stabilized and grew into dense bottomland forest. Today it’s a premier camping and hunting destination near the unique Loess Hills landscape, with modern campsites, 6 miles of multi-use trails, and exceptional wildlife viewing.

The recreation area sits at the edge of the DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge — a 7,800-acre preserve famous for its oxbow lake, snow goose migrations (500,000+ birds in fall), and the museum housing artifacts from the sunken 1865 steamboat Bertrand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Wilson Island in Iowa or Nebraska?

Iowa. Despite its proximity to Fort Calhoun, Nebraska, Wilson Island is managed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and located in Harrison County, Iowa.

What fishing license do I need?

Both work on the main channel. Iowa or Nebraska licenses are valid for the Missouri River itself, but an Iowa license is required for the backwater chute.

Can I see bald eagles here?

Yes — winter is prime time. Bald eagles perch in the cottonwood trees from December through February, making this one of the best eagle-viewing spots along the Missouri River.

🦌 Missouri River Wild
