Preparation Canyon SP — 344 acres — preserves the site where Mormon splinter leader Charles B. Thompson established a communal settlement in 1853 called “Preparation” — preparing followers for their journey to “Zion”. The canyon’s loess hills (wind-deposited soil) are found in only two places on Earth — western Iowa and China’s Yellow River Valley.
