About Windmill

Windmill State Recreation Area in Gibbon โ€” near the geographic center of Nebraska โ€” is named for the iconic windmills that pumped water for ranchers across the Great Plains. The park is near the Gibbon area of the Platte River โ€” one of the prime viewing locations for the annual Sandhill crane migration, when half a million cranes converge on the river.

Things to Do

Fishing, camping, visiting during the March Sandhill crane migration (one of the planet’s greatest wildlife spectacles), and reflecting on the windmill’s role in settling the Great Plains.

About Windmill

Windmill State Recreation Area near Gibbon features a unique collection of restored antique windmills โ€” a tribute to the technology that made Great Plains settlement possible. Located at the I-80 interchange, the park sits at the historic “Windmill Crossing” where Pawnee Indians forded the Platte River during annual buffalo hunts. The working windmills include an 1880 Standard model originally used to pump water for steam locomotives in Colorado. Without windmills to pump water from the Ogallala Aquifer, the Great Plains would have remained unsettled.

Things to Do

Viewing the restored antique windmills (all in working order), camping, picnicking, fishing in the small lake, learning about the role of wind power in plains settlement, and using as an I-80 rest stop with genuine character.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why were windmills important to Nebraska?

Windmills pumped groundwater from the Ogallala Aquifer โ€” enabling ranching and farming in areas with no surface water. By 1900, over 100,000 windmills operated across the Great Plains. They transformed the “Great American Desert” into productive farmland. Many still stand as monuments to pioneer ingenuity.
