Established in 1980, the 350-acre park is located on the site of Rock Creek Station, which was an important stop for pioneers traveling the Oregon and California Trails in the mid-19th century. The park features several restored buildings that visitors can explore, including the Pony Express station, a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a post office. It also includes interpretive exhibits, a nature trail, picnic areas, and a campground with both RV and tent sites. Back in the day, Rock Creek Station was known for its notorious history as a frequent target of bandits and thieves, including the infamous Jesse James. Visitors can learn about the station’s history and the everyday lives of the people who lived and worked there through exhibits and living history demonstrations. Visitors to Rock Creek Station State Historical Park can tour several historic buildings that have been carefully restored and preserved. Some of the buildings that visitors can tour include the 1870s homestead cabin, where you can see period furnishings and learn about the challenges faced by early settlers in Nebraska. In addition, the blacksmith shop features tools and equipment used by blacksmiths during the 1800s, while the Pony Express barn showcases the history of this iconic mail delivery service.

Living history demonstrations at Rock Creek Station State Historical Park

The park offers living history demonstrations that provide visitors with a glimpse into the daily life of pioneers during the mid-1800s. During the summer months, living history demonstrations are held, where costumed interpreters bring history to life by demonstrating traditional pioneer skills such as cooking, sewing, and woodworking. At the interpretive center, guests can also learn about the history of the station and the prominent role it played in the settling of the West.

Throughout the year, the park hosts special events. One of the most popular is the annual Old West Weekend, which includes gunfight reenactments, live music, and demonstrations of frontier skills such as rope-making, spinning, and weaving.

Fishing at Rock Creek Station State Historical Park

As well as the buildings, live demonstrations and events, Rock Creek Station State Historical Park also offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy fishing. This takes place in Rock Creek, which flows through the park. Anglers can catch a variety of fish including catfish, bass, and bluegill. Although they will need a valid Nebraska fishing license in order to do so. Once they have got one, they can choose to fish by the banks of the creek or on a fishing bridge that spans it. Alternatively, they can rent paddle boats, canoes, and kayaks, which will enable them to cast a line from the water and explore the creek and the park’s surroundings in more detail. Should you manage to catch anything, the park also offers a fish cleaning station. The station has a stainless steel cleaning table, running water, and a disposal bin for fish remains.

Hiking at Rock Creek Station State Historical Park

Rock Creek Station State Historical Park offers several hiking trails for visitors to explore the park’s natural beauty. These trails showcase the park’s beautiful rolling hills and diverse wildlife, as well as the rich history of the area. Covering a distance of 1.2 miles, the Oregon Trail Pathway is one of the more popular trails in the park. It follows the historic Oregon Trail and offers interpretive signs along the way, providing information on the trail and its importance to American history. Additionally, the 2-mile Nature Trail is another well trodden path. This trail guides you through a scenic valley and past the park’s beautiful creek, whilst offering beautiful views of its grasslands and woodlands. In addition, hikers can also explore some of the park’s 350 acres of rolling hills and grasslands through its Prairie Trail.

Pets

Pets are allowed in Rock Creek Station State Historical Park, but there are some rules and regulations that must be followed. If you bring your pet to the park they must be kept on a leash of no more than six feet throughout the entirety of their stay. In addition, pets are not permitted from entering certain buildings, unless they are service animals.

Camping

Rock Creek Station State Historical Park offers primitive camping at its designated camping area, which is located near the historic ranch house. This area provides basic amenities such as picnic tables, fire pits, and vault toilets. It also offers a quiet and peaceful setting with easy access to hiking trails and fishing opportunities in the nearby Rock Creek. In addition to the primitive campground, the park also features a modern RV camping area with electrical hookups, showers, and flush toilets. It is advisable to make a reservation at either, as the campgrounds can fill up quickly, especially during peak seasons.
