Beach & Swimming

Two ocean swimming areas are lifeguard-patrolled in summer. The beach extends 6.5 miles — plenty of space even on busy weekends. The bay side offers calmer waters for kayaking, paddleboarding, and windsurfing.

The Indian River Inlet

The heart of the park is the Indian River Inlet, connecting the bays to the Atlantic. It’s a hub for fishing, dining (restaurants with inlet views), and recreation. A bike/pedestrian path crosses the iconic Indian River Inlet Bridge, linking the north and south sections of the park.

Fishing

Delaware Seashore is a premier East Coast fishing destination:

  • Surf fishing — drive-on beach access with permit; flounder, stripers, bluefish
  • Jetty fishing — Indian River Inlet rock jetties
  • Charter fishing — full-service Indian River Marina with offshore charters (tuna, shark, mahi)
  • Seasonal catches: flounder, striped bass, bluefish, tuna, mackerel

Surfing

A dedicated surfing beach just north of the Inlet is accessible year-round. The park also supports kayaking, SUP, and windsurfing from bay-side launch points.

Camping

Two campgrounds on either side of the Indian River Inlet:

  • North Inlet Campground — tents to RVs, full hookups, walking distance to beach
  • South Inlet Campground — similar amenities, close to the marina
  • Amenities: bathhouses, laundry, camp store, bait & tackle shop

How to Get There

  • From Washington, DC (2.5 hours): US-50 East across the Bay Bridge to Route 1 South.
  • From Philadelphia (2 hours): I-95 South to Route 1 South through Dover.

Insider Tips

  1. Get a surf fishing permit for drive-on beach access — worth it for serious anglers
  2. The North Inlet surfing beach is accessible year-round — best waves in fall
  3. Bike/walk across the Inlet Bridge for incredible ocean and bay views
  4. Book campgrounds months ahead for summer — proximity to Rehoboth makes this extremely popular
  5. Combine with Rehoboth Beach (5 min north) for boardwalk dining and shopping
