🏛️ Official Texas State Park – Managed by Texas Parks & Wildlife Department

🏆 Official Guide: Eisenhower State Park — 423 acres of Lake Texoma shoreline with striper fishing, a lighted pier, Ike’s Cabin, and one of the few dedicated ATV areas in a Texas state park.

Eisenhower State Park sits on the rocky southern shore of Lake Texoma, the giant Red River reservoir on the Texas–Oklahoma line — a place where limestone bluffs drop to open water and striped bass boil at dawn. The park is named for the 34th U.S. president, Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was born just down the road in Denison in 1890; the land was leased from the Army in 1954 and opened to the public in 1958. It’s still one of North Texas’s favorite lake escapes, drawing 133,811 visitors in 2025.

What sets Eisenhower apart from the crowd of Texas lake parks is variety in a small footprint: 423.1 acres holding a swimming cove, a lighted fishing pier, more than four miles of trails, bluff-line bouldering, a full-service marina — and a dedicated off-highway-vehicle area, a rarity in the state park system.

What Makes This Park Unique

🎣

Lake Texoma Stripers

Texoma is famous for its self-sustaining striped bass fishery. Fish from a boat, the shoreline, or the park’s lighted pier — no fishing license needed when fishing from shore inside a Texas state park.

🏍️

Dedicated ATV Area

Ride your ATV or dirt bike on trails inside the park — one of very few Texas state parks with a dedicated OHV area (OHV permit required).

🏛️

Ike’s Presidential Roots

Named for Dwight D. Eisenhower, born in nearby Denison in 1890 — pair a park visit with his birthplace in town. Overnight guests can book the park’s own “Ike’s Cabin.”

Marina in the Park

The Eisenhower Yacht Club rents kayaks, canoes, and boat slips right inside the park — launch onto one of the biggest reservoirs on the southern plains without trailering anywhere.

Things to Do

Fishing: Striped bass are the headline act, with catfish and largemouth filling out the stringer. The lighted pier makes evening fishing easy, and shoreline anglers inside the park need no license.

On the water: Swim at the sandy cove, launch a boat, or rent a kayak or canoe from the marina. Texoma’s open water is big enough for water skiing and serious wind.

On land: Hike or bike more than four miles of trails along the bluffs, try bouldering on the limestone ledges, hunt geocaches, or bring the ATV for the OHV trails (permit required).

Camping & Lodging

Campsites run from basic tent sites to pull-through full-hookup sites for big RVs, plus screened shelters and Ike’s Cabin for a roof-and-walls option. Reserve through the TPWD reservation system — summer lake weekends fill early.

Getting There

The park is about 10 minutes northwest of Denison via US-75 and FM 1310, hard against the Denison Dam. From Dallas, allow about 75 minutes north on US-75; the Oklahoma line is literally across the water.

Nearby Parks Worth Combining

Make it a North Texas loop with Bonham State Park (CCC-built lake park, about 45 minutes southeast) or Ray Roberts Lake State Park (about an hour southwest). In Denison itself, the Eisenhower Birthplace State Historic Site completes the Ike story. The Texas state parks guide has the full picture.

Facts verified against Texas Parks & Wildlife Department and public records, July 2026. Fees, hours, and OHV permit rules are set by TPWD — check the official park page before your trip.
