🐻 Wildlife at Grayton Beach State Park: What to Watch For — and Watch Out For
Worth watching for: The park's own wildlife list names Florida black bear, white-tailed deer and gray foxes among the animals inhabiting these nearly 2,000 acres, and the 4.5-mile forest trail that loops around the back waters of Western Lake takes you through their habitat. Grayton Beach is a Great Florida Birding Trail site: shorebirds all along the beach, bald eagles and ospreys throughout the park. On the sand, snowy plovers and least terns nest directly on the open sand and loggerhead and green sea turtles dig nests along the beach, while the endangered Choctawhatchee beach mouse burrows in the dunes just behind it.
Watch out for: Florida black bears are listed by the park as resident wildlife, so give them room on the forest and Western Lake trails. FWC advises statewide that if you encounter a bear at close range you should remain standing upright, speak to it in a calm, assertive voice, back up slowly toward a secure area while leaving the bear a clear escape route, avoid direct eye contact, and never run or climb a tree - and never approach or feed a bear. On the beach the park asks you to never walk on the sand dunes, to watch out for nests on the ground during shorebird nesting season, and to avoid all posted bird and sea turtle nesting areas. There are no lifeguards at Grayton Beach; swimming is at your own risk.
