Heartland State Trail is Minnesota’s first paved biking trail โ€” a 49-mile path running from Park Rapids to Cass Lake through the lake country and pine forests of north-central Minnesota. The trail passes through Itasca State Park (headwaters of the Mississippi River!) and the Chippewa National Forest, crossing numerous lakes, wetlands, and rivers. The Paul Bunyan State Trail connects at Walker, creating a combined 160+ mile network โ€” one of the longest paved trail systems in the nation.

About Heartland Trail

Heartland State Trail runs 49 miles from Park Rapids to Cass Lake through the heart of Minnesota’s lake country โ€” passing through the Chippewa National Forest and near the headwaters of the Mississippi River. The trail was Minnesota’s first paved biking trail (1974) and passes through landscapes of towering red and white pines, wild rice lakes, and logging-era heritage.
