Wildlife & Nature
Hug Point — named because early travelers had to “hug” the cliff face to pass at low tide — preserves a section of the historic stagecoach route carved into the rock. The point’s sea cave, waterfall, and tidepool-rich coastline make it one of the most diverse beach environments on the north Oregon coast. The tidepools support aggregating anemones (clones that form green carpets), purple sea urchins, and hermit crabs. The cliff face reveals layered basalt flows — volcanic eruptions that built the Oregon coast 15-20 million years ago when the Cascadia Subduction Zone was actively volcanic. Peregrine falcons nest on the cliff faces. Black oystercatchers — with their vivid orange-red bills — probe rocky crevices for mussels and limpets.
