Wildlife & Nature
Tolovana Beach — the southern extension of Cannon Beach — provides wide, flat sandy beach perfect for beach walking, kite flying, and building sandcastles. Haystack Rock (235 feet) — Oregon\’s most iconic sea stack — is visible to the north. The rock is a Marine Garden protected area — the tidepools at its base support one of the most accessible and diverse intertidal communities on the Oregon coast. Tufted puffins nest on the rock\’s upper surfaces from April through August — one of the most southerly accessible puffin colonies in the world. Common murres, pelagic cormorants, and pigeon guillemots also nest on the rock. At low tide, visitors can approach the rock (but not climb it) to explore tidepools teeming with sea stars, anemones, and crabs.

Ecola State Park offers dramatic headland hiking used in films (\”The Goonies,\” \”Point Break,\” \”Twilight\”). Hug Point preserves the historic coastal stagecoach route. Oswald West State Park offers surfing at Short Sands and old-growth forest. Astoria — Oregon\’s oldest city — has the Astoria Column, Columbia River Maritime Museum, and Victorian architecture.
