History

Laguna Beach bookstore owner James Dilley came back from Europe in the 1960s with the idea of a greenbelt around his city. Joint efforts led the County of Orange to form Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, which opened on April 10, 1993. Its 7,000 acres are part of the South Coast Wilderness, almost 20,000 acres that also include Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park and Crystal Cove State Park.

Nearby parks: If you have extra time, Crystal Cove State Park is a short drive away, and Corona del Mar State Beach is a short drive away.

America's State Parks is an independent online guide to state parks and other public lands in the United States. Our editorial team compiles park profiles from official agency and operator sources and other identified references, and follows our published editorial policy and review methodology. Where a profile shows a source-check date, that date applies to the detail it names. We correct errors when we find them or when readers report them.
