🏆 Levi Jackson Wilderness Road Park: 896 acres of wooded hills just south of London in Laurel County, Kentucky, crossed by the historic Wilderness Road and Boone’s Trace. This is a former state park. For more than 50 years, the Wilderness Road was the main way settlers reached Kentucky from Virginia. Daniel Boone blazed the trail through the Cumberland Gap in 1775, and during the last quarter of the 18th century more than 200,000 pioneers came this way. Sections of the Wilderness Road and Boone’s Trace run through the park, and two hiking trails with a total of 8.5 miles let you walk the same route. The park is named for Levi Jackson, a Laurel County pioneer. In 1931 his descendants donated the family land, where the Freeman Tavern had stood on the Wilderness Road since 1803, to the state.

Things to Do
- McHargue’s Mill: a working reproduction watermill on the Little Laurel River, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1939. Its working stones came over the Wilderness Road in 1805, and outside is one of the largest collections of millstones in the country. You can buy fresh-ground cornmeal. In season the mill is open Thursday to Saturday 10 a.m.–5 p.m. and Sunday 1–5 p.m.
