Lower Chatanika River State Recreation Area is a state recreation area along the Chatanika River at Mile 11 of the Elliott Highway, approximately one hour north of Fairbanks in interior Alaska, managed by Alaska State Parks (DPOR). The area features two campgrounds — Olnes Pond Campground with 15 sites around a stocked rainbow trout pond plus a reservable public-use cabin, and Whitefish Campground with 25 riverside campsites and direct Chatanika River access, fishing for Arctic grayling throughout the summer and salmon runs (king, silver, and chum) from late July through October, additional species including northern pike, burbot, sheefish, and humpback whitefish, a boat launch at Whitefish Campground for canoe and kayak river float trips, seasonal berry picking in the boreal forest, and winter activities including ice fishing, dog sledding, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling.

The Chatanika River is one of Interior Alaska’s most accessible grayling streamstrophy Arctic grayling are available all summer, and the late-season salmon runs bring kings, silvers, and chum within easy reach of Fairbanks.

Olnes Pond is stocked with rainbow trout — a rarity in Interior Alaska — making it excellent for families and beginning anglers. The nearby public-use cabin is one of the most accessible in the Alaska State Parks system.
