Frequently Asked Questions

Can you climb Big Pinnacle at Pilot Mountain?

No. Climbing on Big Pinnacle has been strictly prohibited since the 1970s to protect nesting ravens and raptors. This includes rock climbing, rappelling, and bouldering. Climbing is only permitted in designated areas such as the cliffs along Ledge Springs Trail, and all climbers must register before climbing. Fines may apply for violations.

What is the Big Pinnacle at Pilot Mountain?

Big Pinnacle is North Carolina’s most iconic geological feature—a quartzite monadnock rising to approximately 1,400 feet. This distinctive knob has served as a navigational landmark for centuries, visible from up to 30 miles away. A trail circles the base offering stunning views, but climbing to the top is prohibited to protect wildlife habitat.

Can you camp on the Yadkin River at Pilot Mountain?

Yes! Pilot Mountain offers unique paddle-in tent sites along the south bank of the Yadkin River, about 0.75 miles downstream from the Shoals Road paddle launch (or 0.5-mile hike). These primitive sites feature pit toilets but no water—bring your own and pack out all trash. Advance reservations required. Note: camping on Yadkin River Islands is NOT permitted.

Does the campground have RV hookups?

No. The 42-site family campground in the mountain section accommodates tents, trailers, and RVs but does not have electric or water hookups. The campground operates seasonally from March 15 through November 30. For more amenities, consider nearby private campgrounds or state parks with full hookups.

What connects the mountain and river sections?

The 6.5-mile Corridor Trail connects Pilot Mountain’s mountain section (with Big Pinnacle) to the Yadkin River section. This trail allows hikers to experience both the dramatic quartzite knob and the scenic river in one visit. The park totals over 20 miles of hiking, bridle, and canoe trails.
