Fort Macon SP — 389 acres — preserves a pentagonal Civil War-era fort (completed 1834) that is one of the most visited state parks in North Carolina (1.5+ million annually). The fort was captured by Union forces in 1862 after a bombardment. The park’s beach, dunes, and maritime forest support loggerhead sea turtles, shorebirds, and bottlenose dolphins.
