Rugby State Natural Area
๐๐๐ Victorian Utopian Colony โ Forest preserving the setting of Thomas Hughes’ 1880 British utopian community
Rugby State Natural Area protects the forest surrounding the historic village of Rugby โ a utopian community founded in 1880 by Thomas Hughes, the English author of Tom Brown’s School Days. Hughes established Rugby as an agricultural colony for younger sons of British gentry who, under primogeniture, would not inherit family estates. The community’s Victorian-era buildings survive as a National Historic Landmark, while the natural area preserves the surrounding old-growth forest that the colonists admired but struggled to farm.
