Sahara Woods (Illinois)
๐๐๐๐๐ Desert in Illinois! โ Unique sandstone landscape with sand barrens and desert-like features โ one of the most unusual natural areas in the Midwest
Sahara Woods State Fish and Wildlife Area protects one of the most unusual landscapes in the Midwest โ a sandstone terrain with sandy barrens, open glades, and desert-like features in Saline County. The “Sahara” name comes from the exposed sandstone and sandy soils that create an unexpectedly arid landscape in otherwise humid southern Illinois. The site supports fire-adapted plant communities โ native grasses and wildflowers that thrive in the dry, sandy conditions. The area’s geology dates to the Pennsylvanian period (300 million years ago) when Illinois was a tropical coastal swamp.

The name reflects the barren, sandy terrain left by coal mining before reclamation efforts transformed it into wildlife habitat.

Wildlife & Nature
Sahara Woods in the Shawnee Hills of southern Illinois provides recreation in one of the most biodiverse regions of the Midwest. The Shawnee Hills โ an unglaciated landscape of sandstone bluffs, limestone caves, and deeply dissected valleys โ escaped the ice sheets that flattened northern Illinois, preserving a rugged terrain more reminiscent of Appalachia than the Midwest. This ancient, unglaciated landscape supports species found nowhere else in Illinois โ southeastern five-lined skinks, eastern worm snakes, and mud puppies. The forest canopy of white oak, tulip poplar, and American beech supports breeding populations of worm-eating warblers, hooded warblers, and Swainson’s warblers โ among the rarest and most secretive songbirds in North America.
