Wildlife & Nature
Blue Lake State Park — not to be confused with the popular Blue Lake near Portland — sits in the coastal mountains of southwestern Oregon near Galice. The park’s lake provides warm-water swimming and fishing in a forested mountain setting. Douglas fir — the dominant tree species in western Oregon’s forests — can reach heights of 300+ feet and live over 1,000 years. The surrounding forest supports black-tailed deer (the Pacific Coast subspecies of mule deer), black bears, and northern flying squirrels — the latter are strictly nocturnal and far more common than most people realize. Pileated woodpeckers — the largest surviving North American woodpecker (ivory-billed is presumed extinct) — hammer distinctive rectangular holes in dead trees.

Rogue River — one of the original National Wild and Scenic Rivers (1968) — offers world-class rafting and fishing. Hellgate Jetboat Excursions provides river tours through the dramatic Hellgate Canyon. Galice is a historic gold mining community and rafting launch point.
