Overview: Towering Dunes Near South Haven

Perched atop some of the highest coastal sand dunes on Lake Michigan’s eastern shore, Van Buren State Park occupies a dramatic stretch of shoreline approximately 4 miles south of the popular resort town of South Haven in Van Buren County. The park’s defining features are its towering, heavily forested dune formations—reaching heights that create a genuine sense of elevation above the lake—and its 1-mile ribbon of pristine sandy beach where the Great Lakes’ cold, clear water meets golden sand in a scene that rivals any ocean coastline.

With approximately 220 modern campsites set among the wooded dunes, Van Buren State Park is one of southwestern Michigan’s most popular camping destinations, drawing families from across the Midwest who return year after year for the combination of spectacular Lake Michigan beach access, convenient proximity to South Haven’s restaurants, wineries, and shops, and the simple, irreplaceable pleasure of watching the sun sink into Lake Michigan from the top of a 100-foot sand dune.

The Dunes

Van Buren’s dunes are among the most impressive along this stretch of the Lake Michigan coast. These are not the gentle, rolling hillocks found at some Michigan beach parks—they are steep, heavily forested formations that rise dramatically from the beach, creating a natural wall between the lakefront and the inland landscape. Climbing the dunes from the beach is a genuine physical effort, rewarded at the top by sweeping views of the open lake and the forested coastline stretching north and south.

The dune forests are dominated by oak, jack pine, and various native shrubs that have adapted to the sandy, nutrient-poor soil and the constant influence of lake winds. These dune ecosystems are ecologically sensitive—visitors should stay on designated trails and avoid climbing on steep, vegetated dune faces where foot traffic can destroy the root systems that hold the sand in place.

The Beach

One mile of Lake Michigan beach extends along the park’s western boundary, providing unlimited space for swimming, sunbathing, beachcombing, and sunset watching. The beach is wide, the sand is fine and golden, and the swimming—while always bracing in Lake Michigan’s perpetually cool water—is excellent from late June through early September when surface temperatures typically reach the upper 60s to low 70s°F.

A connecting path leads from the campground to the beach, passing through the dune forest and descending to the waterfront. The walk is short but involves significant elevation change on stairs and sandy paths—a consideration for visitors with mobility limitations.

The Campground: 220 Modern Sites

The campground is set in the wooded dune landscape behind the beach, nestled among mature oaks and pines that provide generous shade and privacy between sites.

  • Sites: Approximately 220 modern campsites with electrical hookups (20/30 amp)
  • Facilities: Modern restrooms with flush toilets and hot showers
  • Terrain: Sandy, rolling ground typical of dune environments
  • Playground: Children’s play area within the campground
  • No lake views: The campground sits behind the dune ridge; reaching the beach requires walking the connecting path

South Haven Connection

Van Buren State Park’s location just minutes from downtown South Haven gives campers easy access to one of southwestern Michigan’s most charming lakefront communities.

  • The South Haven Pier and Lighthouse: An iconic Lake Michigan landmark, perfect for sunset walks and fishing
  • Wine Trail: The surrounding region is part of the Lake Michigan Shore AVA, with numerous wineries and tasting rooms within a short drive
  • Blueberry Capital: South Haven is famous for its blueberry farms—u-pick opportunities are abundant during July and August
  • Kal-Haven Trail: The 34-mile paved rail-trail connects South Haven to Kalamazoo, passing through charming small towns and scenic countryside

Lagoon Rehabilitation (2025–2026)

The park underwent a major lagoon rehabilitation and beach access improvement project beginning in September 2025. This infrastructure upgrade addresses long-term wastewater management and improves accessibility to the beach area. Visitors should check the Michigan DNR website for the most current reopening status and any ongoing construction impacts before planning their visit.
