Grand Haven State Park: Michigan’s Premier Lake Michigan Beach

Where the Grand River meets Lake Michigan, Grand Haven State Park occupies 48 sun-drenched acres of wide, sandy beach on one of the Great Lakes’ most beautiful shorelines. It’s compact in size but colossal in charm — a half-mile stretch of golden sand, iconic lighthouse piers, legendary sunsets, and one of Michigan’s most popular beachfront campgrounds.

Grand Haven itself is consistently ranked among the best beach towns in America, and the state park is its crown jewel. With the famous Grand Haven Lighthouse standing sentinel at the harbor entrance, the boardwalk buzzing with anglers and sunset-watchers, and the turquoise waters of Lake Michigan stretching to the horizon, this is pure Michigan at its finest.

🌅 Why Visit Grand Haven? This is one of the few state parks in America where you can camp steps from the beach, watch freighters enter a working harbor, walk to a historic lighthouse, and stroll a charming downtown boardwalk — all without moving your car.

The Beach

Grand Haven’s beach is wide, clean, and composed of fine golden sand — a signature feature of Michigan’s western shore. The beach runs a half-mile along Lake Michigan and also borders the Grand River channel to the north, giving visitors water access on two sides.

  • Swimming: Designated swim beach with lifeguards in summer
  • Volleyball: Multiple nets set up on the sand
  • Sunbathing: Wide, spacious beach with room for everyone
  • Accessibility: Free track chairs available for beach access
  • Playground: Beach playground areas for children

The Lighthouse & Pier

The Grand Haven South Pierhead Lights are among Michigan’s most iconic and photographed landmarks. The red-painted inner light and the red catwalk connecting to the outer light are situated at the end of a concrete pier that juts into Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Grand River.

⚠️ Pier Safety: The pier can be extremely dangerous during storms. Large waves can sweep across the entire structure. Check conditions before walking to the end. Do not walk the pier during high winds or large swells. The catwalk is gated and restricted during hazardous conditions.

  • Fishing: Cast from the boardwalk or pier — perch, walleye, steelhead, salmon

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Grand Haven State Park beach free?

The beach itself doesn’t have a separate fee, but all vehicles need a Michigan Recreation Passport to enter. For Michigan-registered vehicles, it’s $11/year (added at license plate renewal) or $14 at the park kiosk. Non-residents pay $11 for a day pass or $40 for an annual pass.

Can you camp on the beach at Grand Haven?

The 174-site campground is directly adjacent to the beach — some of the closest beachfront camping in Michigan. Sites are paved and designed for trailers/RVs with 30 or 50 amp electric hookups. While you can’t pitch a tent directly on the sand, you’ll be steps away from the beach. Reservations fill 6 months out for summer weekends.

Can you walk to the Grand Haven Lighthouse?

Yes — the concrete pier leading to the Grand Haven South Pierhead Lights is open to the public and accessible from the state park beach. It’s about a quarter-mile walk to the end. The catwalk connecting the inner and outer lights may be closed during storms. Never walk the pier during high waves or severe weather — this is a genuine safety hazard.

What is the Musical Fountain in Grand Haven?

Grand Haven’s Musical Fountain is the world’s largest musical fountain, performing nightly shows synchronized to music and colored lights from May through September. It’s located across the Grand River from the state park on Dewey Hill and is free to watch. Shows typically start around dusk. It’s a Grand Haven tradition since 1962.

When is the Coast Guard Festival?

The Coast Guard Festival takes place during the first full week of August (typically 10 days). It celebrates Grand Haven’s designation as “Coast Guard City, USA” with parades, concerts, fireworks, ship tours, and carnival rides. The park and campground are at their busiest during this event — book camping months in advance.

Is Lake Michigan safe to swim in at Grand Haven?

Yes, but with caution. Lake Michigan can produce dangerous rip currents and longshore currents, especially on windy days or after storms. Always swim in the designated swim beach area where lifeguards are on duty (typically Memorial Day through Labor Day). Check flag warnings at the beach — red means no swimming. Never swim near the pier or breakwall.

Are dogs allowed at Grand Haven State Park?

Dogs are allowed in the campground and day-use areas on a 6-foot leash, but they are NOT allowed on the beach itself from April 15 to September 15. During the off-season (mid-September to mid-April), leashed dogs may be walked on the beach. Service animals are permitted year-round.
