About Walgren Lake
Walgren Lake State Recreation Area in Sheridan County provides fishing on a 50-acre lake in the Pine Ridge region of northwestern Nebraska โ and harbors one of the Great Plains’ great legends. Originally called Alkali Lake, the lake has been the subject of “monster” sightings since the early 1920s, when local ranchers reported a 40-foot creature with a horn-like appendage. The Nebraska legislature even passed a resolution acknowledging the legend. The lake sits beneath the dramatic Pine Ridge escarpment.
