🏆 South Dakota’s Black Hills Beach — Crystal Waters & 36 Miles of Sandy Shoreline — Updated for 2026 with camping reservations, boating info, fishing tips, and seasonal guide

You’d be forgiven for thinking you took a wrong turn. The water is crystal clear, the beaches are white sand, and the sky is the bottomless blue of the American West — but you’re in South Dakota, just 10 miles from Hot Springs, at the foot of the Black Hills. This is Angostura Recreation Area, centered around a 4,400-acre reservoir with 36 miles of sandy shoreline and some of the warmest, clearest water in the Northern Plains. The name is Spanish for “narrows” — but there’s nothing narrow about the fun.

Created in 1949 by damming the Cheyenne River, Angostura Reservoir has become one of South Dakota’s most popular recreation destinations. The park offers 171 campsites, 14 camping cabins, a marina with 155 boat slips, excellent walleye and bass fishing, miles of sandy swim beaches, and proximity to the Black Hills’ many attractions — including Mount Rushmore, Wind Cave National Park, and Custer State Park.
