🏆 Official Guide: Watkins Mill State Park — a 1,442-acre park wrapped around a 100-acre lake near Kansas City, paired with a National Historic Landmark woolen mill that still holds its original 19th-century machinery.
Watkins Mill State Park is two experiences in one place: an easy lakeside recreation area 40 minutes northeast of Kansas City, and one of the most remarkable industrial-history sites in the country. The park’s 1,442 acres surround a 100-acre lake ringed by a paved bike-and-hike path, while the adjoining Watkins Woolen Mill State Historic Site preserves the only 19th-century textile mill in North America with its original machinery still in place.
Waltus L. Watkins built the three-story mill in 1859–1860 on his Bethany Plantation, adding worker housing that made it one of North America’s first planned industrial communities. The mill was named a National Historic Landmark (and added to the National Register) in 1966, and a National Mechanical Engineering Historic Landmark in 1980. Like all Missouri state parks, entry and parking are free.
What Makes This Park Unique
A Mill Frozen in Time
The 1860s woolen mill still holds its original looms, spinning frames, and belts — the only surviving 19th-century textile mill in North America with its machinery intact.
Lake Loop for Wheels
A paved 3.75-mile trail circles the 100-acre lake — flat, scenic, and popular with cyclists, runners, and families.
A Planned Village
Watkins built worker homes, a church, and a school beside the mill — one of the earliest planned industrial communities on the continent, still standing to tour.
Lake Recreation Near KC
Fishing, swimming beach, and a wooded campground make it an easy overnight within an hour of Kansas City.
Things to Do
Historic site tours: Guided tours of the woolen mill and the Watkins family home run seasonally through the State Historic Site — the machinery demonstrations are the highlight.
Biking & hiking: The paved lake loop is the signature route; additional trails wind through the surrounding woods and farmland.
Fishing & swimming: The 100-acre lake has a swimming beach and good bank and boat fishing for bass, crappie, and catfish.
Camping
The park’s wooded campground sits near the south end of the lake with basic and electric sites, two modern restrooms, hot showers, a dump station, and coin laundry. Reserve through iCampMO up to 12 months ahead.
