Big Elk Creek State Park is a 1,100-acre state park in southern Chester County, southeastern Pennsylvania, officially designated in 2022 as one of Pennsylvania’s newest state parks, managed by Pennsylvania DCNR. The park features Big Elk Creek — a trout-stocked stream flowing through a scenic Piedmont forest valley, hiking and mountain biking trails through deciduous hardwood forest and restored meadows, rich biodiversity including several state-threatened and rare plant species adapted to the serpentinite barrens geology, historic farmsteads and stone ruins from early European settlement dating to the 18th century, popular fishing for stocked trout and native creek species including smallmouth bass, wildflower displays in spring throughout the forest understory and meadow edges, and a valuable protected greenspace in the rapidly developing greater Philadelphia suburban corridor.
The park’s serpentinite barrens are geologically unique — this uncommon rock type creates mineral-rich soils that support rare plant communities found at only a few locations in the mid-Atlantic. The grassland-like barrens habitat looks dramatically different from the surrounding forest.
As Pennsylvania’s newest state park, Big Elk Creek represents the commonwealth’s commitment to preserving greenspace in the fastest-growing region of the state — suburban development pressure makes every acre of protected land here increasingly valuable.
