Less than 1% of Minnesota’s original tallgrass prairie survives. Buffalo River State Park protects one of the finest remaining stands — a sea of big bluestem, Indian grass, and prairie wildflowers stretching to the horizon, adjacent to the Nature Conservancy’s Bluestem Prairie, one of the largest protected prairies in the upper Midwest.

The park also wraps around the Buffalo River — clear, shallow water with a designated swimming area and a wooded campground in the cottonwood floodplain.

The Tallgrass Prairie Ecosystem

Before European settlement, tallgrass prairie covered 18 million acres of Minnesota. Today, less than 1% remains — making intact tallgrass prairie rarer than tropical rainforest. Buffalo River State Park and the adjacent Bluestem Prairie protect one of the most significant surviving stands.

Buffalo River SP — near Moorhead — preserves one of Minnesota’s finest remnants of tallgrass prairie. The adjacent Bluestem Prairie (Nature Conservancy) creates a 6,000-acre contiguous prairie. Prairie chickens perform booming displays in spring. Bison once roamed here. Western meadowlarks and upland sandpipers nest in the grass.
