๐Ÿ•๏ธ The State Capital’s Island Getaway โ€” Camping on the Missouri River in the Heart of South Dakota โ€” Farm Island Recreation Area on the Missouri River near Pierre, South Dakota, island campground, swimming beach, fishing, boating, nature trails, cottonwood forest, wildlife viewing, state capital proximity, Lake Sharpe โ€” Hughes County, SD

South Dakota’s capital city is Pierre โ€” population 14,000, sitting on the Missouri River in the geographic center of nowhere. Farm Island is a 1,553-acre recreation area just east of town, where the Missouri widens into Lake Sharpe and a cottonwood island becomes the best campground within sight of a state capitol dome.

This is state park camping with a civic address. Pitch your tent under cottonwoods so old they’ve watched the Missouri change course. Walk to the swimming beach. Fish for walleye from the shore. Spot white-tailed deer and wild turkeys on the nature trails. And drive 10 minutes into Pierre for dinner at a restaurant where the waiter might be a state legislator.

What to Do

ActivityDetails
CampingMultiple campground loops with tent, RV, and cabin options. Electric hookups. Modern restrooms and showers. Some sites back up to the river โ€” listen to the Missouri while you sleep. The cottonwood canopy provides deep shade in summer
Swimming BeachSandy beach on Lake Sharpe โ€” the Missouri River impoundment behind Oahe Dam. The water is cleaner and calmer than the free-flowing Missouri. A proper swimming beach with sand, sun, and Great Plains sky from horizon to horizon
FishingLake Sharpe and the Missouri River tailwaters produce walleye, smallmouth bass, northern pike, and catfish. The tailrace below Oahe Dam is one of the best walleye fisheries in America. Bank fishing from the recreation area or boat access to the river and lake
Nature TrailsMiles of trails through cottonwood forest, riparian habitat, and grassland. The island ecology is rich โ€” white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, pheasants, and songbirds. The Farm Island Nature Area preserves a piece of Missouri River bottomland that most of the river lost to development
BoatingBoat ramp with access to Lake Sharpe and the upper Missouri. Pontoon boats, fishing boats, and kayaks all work. The lake is wide and wind-exposed โ€” check the forecast. The Missouri below the dam is swift and productive

The Pierre Setting

FeatureDetails
State CapitalPierre is the second-smallest state capital in America โ€” and one of the most remote. The nearest interstate is 200+ miles away. The state capitol building sits on a hill overlooking the Missouri. It’s a town that exists because someone had to put the government somewhere
Missouri RiverThe Missouri is everything here โ€” the reason for the town, the recreation, the landscape. Oahe Dam (one of the largest earth-rolled dams in the world) creates Lake Oahe to the north and Lake Sharpe downstream. The river’s transformation from wild to managed is visible
Great PlainsPierre sits at the transition between the eastern and western Great Plains. East of the Missouri: corn and soybeans. West of the Missouri: cattle ranches and grassland. The sky is enormous. The horizon is 360 degrees of open
WildlifeThe Missouri River corridor is a wildlife highway โ€” bald eagles in winter, pelicans in migration, shorebirds year-round. The cottonwood bottomlands at Farm Island are some of the richest habitat in central South Dakota

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Farm Island from Pierre?

About 4 miles east of downtown Pierre. You can camp at Farm Island and drive into town for restaurants, groceries, and the South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center. It’s the rare campground where “getting away from it all” and “being near civilization” coexist.

Is the walleye fishing really that good?

Yes โ€” the Oahe Dam tailrace is nationally recognized. The cold, oxygen-rich water below the dam creates ideal walleye habitat. Spring and fall runs are the best, but walleye are caught year-round. Hire a local guide if you want to find the fish fast.

๐Ÿ•๏ธ Camp on the Missouri. Fish for Walleye. Drive 10 Minutes to the State Capitol.

A 1,553-acre island where the Missouri meets Lake Sharpe. Cottonwoods for shade. A swimming beach for summer. Walleye in the tailrace. And the smallest, most remote state capital in America just down the road. South Dakota at its most quietly perfect.
