Platte Creek Recreation Area offers recreation near the confluence of Platte Creek and the Missouri River in Charles Mix County. The Missouri River at this point flows through Lake Francis Case โ one of the massive reservoirs that transformed South Dakota’s landscape in the 1950s and 1960s. The nearby town of Platte was founded by Czech immigrants in the 1880s โ part of a wave of European settlement that transformed the northern Great Plains from buffalo country to farmland in a single generation.
