Frequently Asked Questions

What is Bird Island?

Bird Island (also called Goat Island) is the largest island off the Oregon Coast and a designated National Wildlife Refuge. It’s a crucial breeding ground for seabirds including the rare tufted puffin. View it from the park’s overlooks—access to the island itself is restricted.

What is Key Hole Rock?

Key Hole Rock is a distinctive sea stack with a natural opening that allows light and waves to pass through. It’s one of the most photographed features at Harris Beach—especially dramatic at sunrise or sunset when light streams through the arch.

When is the best time for tidepools?

Visit at low tide to explore the Harris Beach Marine Garden. The rocky outcroppings reveal colorful tidepools full of sea stars, anemones, crabs, and small fish. Check tide charts before your visit.

Is there a parking fee?

Yes. Starting October 1, 2025, a day-use parking permit is required at Harris Beach State Park. Oregon State Park annual passes are available and cover day-use at all participating parks.

Can I camp year-round?

Yes! Harris Beach State Park campground operates year-round. Reservations can be made up to 6 months in advance. Note: some campsites will be closed July 21-23, 2026 for scheduled tree work.
