Wildlife & Nature
This section of the Boardman corridor showcases the southern Oregon coast’s unique geological heritage — where the Klamath Mountains meet the Pacific in dramatic fashion. The coast here is composed of ancient metamorphic rocks — some over 200 million years old — unlike the volcanic basalt of the northern Oregon coast. This geological diversity supports different tidepool communities and creates the dramatic headland/cove landscape that defines the corridor. Whaleshead Beach — named for a whale-shaped rock — is accessible via a steep trail. Indian Sands provides an otherworldly landscape of sand-covered headlands. Black oystercatchers, wandering tattlers, and surfbirds forage on the rocky shores. Steller sea lions breed on the offshore rocks — their bellowing territorial calls carry for miles.
