Wildlife & Nature
Darlingtonia State Natural Site protects one of Oregon’s most extraordinary botanical features — a bog filled with cobra lilies (Darlingtonia californica), one of North America’s most dramatic carnivorous plants. These pitcher plants — which can grow 3 feet tall — lure insects with nectar, trap them inside translucent “windows” that confuse the prey, and digest them with enzymes. They grow only in serpentine-derived soils where nutrient levels are so low that supplementing with captured insects provides a competitive advantage. The bog also supports sundews (another carnivorous plant) and sphagnum moss. The site’s cold spring-fed water keeps the bog cool even in summer. Rough-skinned newts — whose skin toxin is lethal to nearly all predators — inhabit the wet areas.
