Alfred A. Loeb State Park protects some of the northernmost groves of myrtle wood (California bay laurel) — a tree found only in southwestern Oregon and California. The park’s Riverview Trail winds through ancient myrtle wood groves where some specimens exceed 300 years old and 5 feet in diameter. The Chetco River — one of Oregon’s cleanest and most scenic rivers — supports wild runs of Chinook salmon, coho salmon, and steelhead trout. Roosevelt elk — the largest elk subspecies in North America (bulls reach 1,100+ pounds) — browse the riverside meadows.
