Hoffmaster State Park
Where Dune Science Meets Lake Michigan Magic
P.J. Hoffmaster State Park is the reference park for Michigan’s sand dune ecosystems. Its Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center — perched atop a massive dune — serves as the state’s primary educational facility for coastal dune ecology, and the park’s 10 miles of trails offer everything from gentle woodland walks to the legendary Dune Overlook stairway, a 220-step climb to a panoramic observation platform above Lake Michigan.
Located in Muskegon along 3 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, Hoffmaster packs 297 modern campsites, two distinct beach areas, and some of the most photogenic dune landscapes in the Great Lakes region into a single park. It’s the kind of place that makes you understand why Michigan protects its dunes so fiercely.
🏛️ Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center
The recently renovated Gillette Visitor Center is the crown jewel of the park. Situated on top of a prominent dune, it houses interactive exhibits about dune formation, plant succession, and the ecological importance of Michigan’s coastal dune systems. Educational programs run throughout the summer, and the center serves as a convenient trailhead for several popular hikes.
