Location & Getting There

Jim Hogg Historic Site is located off U.S. Highway 84, about two miles northeast of Rusk in Cherokee County, Texas. The park’s coordinates are 31.8034, -95.1254.

Things to Do

Jim Hogg Park covers 178.4 acres of East Texas Pineywoods just east of Rusk, with a memorial to James Stephen Hogg, the first native-born governor of Texas. Its 1.4-mile loop trail is an easy walk on which you may see birds, squirrels and occasionally deer. When the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department returned the park to the city in 2000, it listed a scale replica of the birthplace, a museum, the family cemetery, a nature trail and a picnic area. The city’s own pages do not confirm whether all of these are still in place. Sources: Rusk Economic Development Corporation and TPWD, 2000, as of October 2026.

Visitor Tips

Jim Hogg Historic Site is managed by the City of Rusk, not by Texas State Parks, so the Texas State Parks Pass and TPWD reservations do not apply. The 178-acre park preserves part of the old Mountain Home Plantation, birthplace of Governor James Stephen Hogg.
