Tucked away in the beautiful Catskill Mountains of Sullivan County, New York, Lake Superior State Park offers a shockingly peaceful lakeside retreat just a short drive from the historic site of the 1969 Woodstock festival. Despite the grand name, this is not the massive Great Lake; instead, it is a serene, 1,409-acre park centered around a pristine 179-acre lake and Chestnut Ridge Pond.

Uniquely, while the land is owned by the Palisades Interstate Park Commission (PIPC), the park itself is actually managed and operated completely by Sullivan County. Because of this local management, the park maintains a very localized, community-focused feel. It is a fantastic summer day-trip destination for families looking to swim, rent a kayak, picnic under the pavilions, and cast a line into clear mountain waters.

Lake Superior State Park at a Glance

  • Location: 342 Dr. Duggan Rd, Bethel, NY 12720 (Sullivan County)
  • Size: 1,409 total acres (179-acre Lake Superior)
  • Entry Fee: $5 per person day pass (Summer operating hours only). Free for children under 3.
  • Main Attractions: Swimming beach, electric-only boating, public boat launch, lakeside picnicking
  • Camping: strictly prohibited across the entire park
  • Pet Policy: Leashed dogs are welcome in the park, but absolutely prohibited on the beach or in the water.

Summer Days on the Water

Because the park explicitly forbids camping, the energy here is entirely focused on day-use summer recreation. The main entrance off Dr. Duggan Road deposits visitors directly into the heart of the action at the beach and boat launch.

The Swimming Beach

The park’s most popular feature is its large, sandy swimming beach. Operated by Sullivan County lifeguards, the beach is open on weekends starting Memorial Day, and then translates to 7-days-a-week operation from late June through Labor Day. A modern bathhouse provides restrooms, vending machines, and hot showers.

Boating (Electric Motors Only)

Lake Superior is a “quiet lake.” To protect the peace and water quality, gas-powered outboard motors are strictly prohibited. The public boat launch is specifically for canoes, kayaks, and small aluminum boats equipped only with electric trolling motors. Don’t have a boat? The park offers affordable on-site rentals for rowboats, pedal boats, and kayaks.

Fishing & Ice Fishing

Whether you’re casting from a silent electric boat in the summer or drilling through the ice in January, Lake Superior offers solid multi-species fishing. Anglers can expect to pull in largemouth bass, chain pickerel, panfish, and brown bullhead. A valid New York State DEC fishing license is required for anyone 16 or older.

Group Picnicking

If you are hosting a massive family reunion or a corporate retreat in the Catskills, Lake Superior State Park is highly recommended. The park features lush, grassy picnic areas with hundreds of tables and several massive, heavy-duty group pavilions that can be rented in advance through Sullivan County.

A Four-Season Escape

While the lifeguards go home and the boat rentals shutter after Labor Day, the park does not close. In fact, many locals prefer the park in the “off-season” when the gate fees drop to zero and the crowds vanish completely.

SeasonPrimary ActivitiesImportant Info
AutumnLeaf peeping, late-season fishing, and woodland hikes.Big game hunting (Whitetail Deer, Black Bear, and Turkey) is permitted in designated deep-woods sections of the park. Wear blaze orange.
WinterIce fishing, sledding, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. The parking lots are frequently plowed, but the trails are left ungroomed for a wild, backcountry skiing experience.

Where to Camp: Because you cannot sleep at Lake Superior State Park, out-of-town visitors looking to camp should drive roughly 30 minutes south to the massive Mongaup Pond Campground, which is operated by the NYS DEC and offers excellent heavily wooded sites.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who operates Lake Superior State Park?

It is an interesting hybrid. The land itself is owned by the Palisades Interstate Park Commission (part of the New York State parks system), but daily operations, lifeguarding, maintenance, and fee collection are entirely managed by Sullivan County.

Can I use my Empire Pass here?

No. Because the park is operated by Sullivan County and not the central NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP), the standard New York State Empire Pass is NOT accepted for admission. You must pay the county’s $5 per person entry fee.

Are there marked hiking trails?

While hiking is permitted throughout the 1,409 acres, the park lacks a modern, heavily blazed trail system. Most hikers stick to the wide, unmarked paths that ring the lake and pond. Bring a GPS if you plan to venture deep into the hunting areas.
