Overview: A 944-Acre Refuge 25 Miles from Downtown Detroit

Nestled on the western edge of Northville—just 25 miles northwest of downtown Detroit—Maybury State Park’s 944 acres of rolling meadows, mature forest, and winding trails provide the closest full-scale state park experience available to the 4.3 million residents of the Metro Detroit area. This is not a small urban green space masquerading as a state park; Maybury delivers genuine year-round outdoor recreation, including 11 miles of equestrian trails, a working farm, a mountain bike course, cross-country skiing, and an on-site riding stable—all within the suburban ring of Michigan’s largest metropolitan area.

The land has a poignant history. Before it became a state park in 1975, the property was the Maybury Sanatorium—a tuberculosis treatment facility established in the early 20th century, when fresh air, open space, and sunshine were considered essential elements of TB therapy. When the state acquired the land in 1971 after the sanatorium closed, the same qualities that made it therapeutic for patients—open meadows, mature forest, rolling terrain, and distances from dense development—made it ideal for public recreation.

11 Miles of Equestrian Trails

Maybury is one of the premier equestrian recreation destinations in southeastern Michigan, with 11 miles of looped trails winding through the park’s gently rolling terrain, open meadows, and mature forests. The trails are rated easy and open year-round.

  • Equestrian Staging Area: Pavilion, restrooms, picket posts, fire pits, mounting blocks, and picnic tables
  • Maybury Stables: An on-site riding stable near the Beck Road entrance offering guided trail rides for various skill levels and equestrian summer camps for young riders

Multi-Use Trail System

Beyond the equestrian trails, the park offers a comprehensive trail network serving multiple user groups:

  • Paved Pathway (4 miles): A smooth, paved loop ideal for jogging, walking, inline skating, and wheelchair access
  • Hiking Trails: Natural-surface trails through forest and meadow habitats
  • Mountain Biking: Designated mountain bike trails with moderate terrain challenges
  • Cross-Country Skiing: Groomed trails when snow cover permits—one of the most accessible skiing locations for Metro Detroit residents

Maybury Farm

Adjacent to the state park, the 80-acre Maybury Farm—operated by the Northville Community Foundation—functions as a working farm and educational center. The farm offers animal exhibits (chickens, goats, pigs, horses, sheep), seasonal events including corn mazes and hayrides, and educational programming that connects suburban families with agricultural traditions.

Fishing Pond

A stocked fishing pond within the park provides catch-and-release fishing opportunities—a convenient introduction to fishing for young anglers in the Metro Detroit area who may not have easy access to other fishing destinations.

From Sanatorium to State Park

The Maybury Sanatorium operated on this land during the early-to-mid 20th century, treating tuberculosis patients with the prevailing therapy of the era: fresh air, sunshine, and rest in a natural setting far from urban pollution. When advances in antibiotic treatment rendered sanatoriums obsolete, the facility closed and the state converted the property to recreational use. Some traces of the sanatorium era remain in the landscape—foundations, overgrown paths, and the general layout of open spaces—adding a layer of historical resonance to a walk through the park.
