Overview

The Michigan DNR Outdoor Adventure Center is an interactive education and recreation facility located on Detroit’s riverfront in the historic Globe Building at 1801 Atwater Street. Managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the center brings the “Up North” outdoor experience to downtown Detroit through over 20 hands-on exhibits, simulators, and interactive displays.

The three-story facility introduces urban residents and visitors to Michigan’s natural resources, outdoor recreation opportunities, and the work of the DNR in managing the state’s parks, forests, and wildlife. It is located adjacent to William G. Milliken State Park and Harbor, Michigan’s first urban state park.

Exhibits and Activities

Interactive simulators let visitors experience mountain biking, snowmobiling, and kayaking. A massive 35-foot bur oak tree installation invites climbing through roots and across a canopy bridge. A real waterfall provides a touch-and-explore experience, while a large aquarium showcases native Michigan fish species. Visitors can board a real airplane and experience a “fly like an eagle” flight simulator.

Visitor Information

Admission is $5 for ages 13 and older, $3 for ages 2-12, and free for children under 2. The facility is fully accessible with elevators to all three floors and sensory-friendly kits available. A Michigan Recreation Passport is NOT required for the Outdoor Adventure Center.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Detroit really coming back?

Detroit filed the largest municipal bankruptcy in US history in 2013 — but has since seen significant revitalization. The downtown and midtown areas have attracted investment, restaurants, and tech companies. The population decline (1.85 million in 1950 to 640,000 today) has slowed. Challenges remain — many neighborhoods still struggle with vacancy and poverty. But Detroit’s cultural assets (Motown, auto heritage, architecture) and entrepreneurial spirit drive genuine renewal.
