What was the Great Thumb Fire?

On September 5, 1881, drought conditions and slash (logging debris) fueled a massive fire across Michigan’s Thumb — burning 1 million+ acres in a single day. 282 people died and thousands were left homeless. The disaster led to the creation of the American Red Cross’s first major relief operation — Clara Barton herself came to Michigan. The fire transformed the landscape from cutover forest to the farmland that dominates the Thumb today.

Getting There

Located near Manistee in Mason County on Lake Michigan’s eastern shore. The area provides access to Michigan’s famous dune coast — the largest freshwater dune system on Earth. Mason County’s Lake Michigan beaches offer Caribbean-clear turquoise water during summer upwelling events. Manistee’s Victorian downtown and the North Country Trail are nearby attractions.

Insider Tips

Thumb region: Wetzel sits in Michigan’s “Thumb” — the distinctive peninsula between Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron. Pro tip: The Thumb was devastated by the Great Thumb Fire of 1881 — which burned 1 million+ acres on the same day as the Peshtigo Fire’s anniversary. Agriculture: After the fires cleared the forests, the Thumb became prime farmland — now Michigan’s sugar beet and navy bean capital.
