What was the Great Thumb Fire?
On September 5, 1881, drought conditions and slash (logging debris) fueled a massive fire across Michigan’s Thumb — burning 1 million+ acres in a single day. 282 people died and thousands were left homeless. The disaster led to the creation of the American Red Cross’s first major relief operation — Clara Barton herself came to Michigan. The fire transformed the landscape from cutover forest to the farmland that dominates the Thumb today.
Getting There
Located near Manistee in Mason County on Lake Michigan’s eastern shore. The area provides access to Michigan’s famous dune coast — the largest freshwater dune system on Earth.
