🐾 Live Prairie Dog Colony, 1890s Adobe House, and 1,000-Acre Reservoir — High Plains Kansas at Its Best — A 1,150-acre park on Keith Sebelius Reservoir with a live prairie dog colony, historic adobe house and schoolhouse, walleye fishing, swimming beach, and disc golf — Norton County, Kansas

Prairie Dog State Park delivers one of the most uniquely Kansas experiences in the entire state park system — a live prairie dog colony of ~300 animals near the park entrance, a 1890s adobe house (one of the last remaining in Kansas), and a 1,000-acre reservoir stocked with walleye, wiper, bass, crappie, and catfish. The 1886 Hillmon Schoolhouse completes the historic picture of frontier life on the High Plains.

Adjacent to the park, the 6,400-acre Norton Wildlife Area opens up vast high-plains prairie for hunting (pheasant, quail, deer) and wildlife viewing. The Steve Mathes Nature Trail features interpretive signs and seasonal storybook displays for families.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I actually see prairie dogs?

Yes — about 300 of them. The colony is near the park entrance and easily visible from the road. They’re active year-round but most entertaining in spring when pups emerge.

What is the adobe house?

One of the last remaining adobe houses in Kansas, built in the early 1890s. Combined with the 1886 Hillmon Schoolhouse, it paints a picture of frontier life on the High Plains.

Is the fishing good?

Very good. Keith Sebelius Reservoir is stocked with walleye, wiper (hybrid striped bass), largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish. A public fishing dock is available.
