Swanson Reservoir State Recreation Area features a 4,974-acre reservoir on the Republican River in Hitchcock County โ one of the largest reservoirs in southwestern Nebraska. The dam was built in 1953 as part of a massive federal project to tame the Republican River after catastrophic floods. The reservoir offers excellent walleye, crappie, and channel catfish fishing. Hitchcock County (named for Senator Phineas Hitchcock, who championed the Timber Culture Act of 1873) is classic High Plains country โ wide-open grasslands stretching to the horizon. The sunset views over the reservoir are among the best in Nebraska.
