Sherman Reservoir State Recreation Area features a 2,845-acre reservoir in the heart of central Nebraska โ known locally as one of the best crappie fisheries in the state. The reservoir sits at the edge of the Sandhills, where the rolling dune-covered grasslands transition to the Loup River watershed. Sherman County was named for Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman. The Tri-County Canal system brings Platte River water to the reservoir โ a testament to Nebraska’s massive irrigation infrastructure (Nebraska has more irrigated acres than any state except California!). Over 8.5 million acres of Nebraska farmland are irrigated.
