Winthrop Shore Reservation provides 1.5 miles of oceanfront along the Winthrop peninsula — one of the closest ocean beaches to downtown Boston. Named for John Winthrop, the first governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony (1630), the town sits on a peninsula surrounded by Boston Harbor, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Belle Isle Marsh — the last remaining salt marsh in Boston proper. The beach offers direct views of Logan Airport’s runways.
